Plan a special trip at affordable price for lovers of the sea, surf, dolphins
and sea turtles … Brazil, Fernando de Noronha (hotel 7 nights/2 pers starting from 400
euro).
Volcanic mountains whose peaks emerge
from the crystalline bluish green waters of the Ocean and sketch one
of the most spectacular Atlantic archipelagos:
Fernando de Noronha.
More than twenty islands lying off the coast of
Brazil, an ecological sanctuary that delights people
from all over the world with its exuberant beauty and for being an example of
environmental preservation. Although these
beautiful islands seem to be isolated in their charm and away from the rest of the world, they can be reached daily
by plane from Recife.
There are many reasons to visit this place (Natural World Heritage, 2001)
where tourism is developed in a sustainable manner, creating an opportunity of
a balanced meeting between the man and the nature.
Popular attractions include the beaches and bays distributed between the
onshore and the offshore. The onshore is the side of the archipelago facing
Brazil: here the sea is calm, protected from winds most of the year and
suitable for swimming and diving.
The
offshore side faces Africa; here the sea is more exposed to the winds therefore more
suitable for sports like surfing. Surfers
love this area especially for the quality of the waves that originate in the
North Atlantic. How the swells make it the thousands of miles south is a bit of a
mystery, the most likely scenario is that they are pushed along by
favourable winds and ocean currents.
Moreover, the
surrounding deep water and lack of continental shelf allows the swells to hit
with unimpeded speed and power. Every year between January and
February in Fernando de Noronha takes place the most famous surfing
championship of Brazil: the Hang Loose Pro Contest.

There's plenty of fun also for those who love the boat. Every year in September people
can take part in the Recife-Fernando de Noronha International Regatta (REFENO),
which attracts not only sailors from all over the world, but also visitors,
lovers of sea turtles and of dolphins. The archipelago is indeed a paradise for
those who want to know the local sea fauna and scuba diving. They can admire
large areas full of colored fish looking like a huge aquarium. Every day at 8
p.m. the Museu Aberto da Tartaruga marinha hold lectures on the environment,
composing the cycle with the greatest continuity ever heard in Brazil.
There are also enchanting landscapes for those
who want to explore the land. About ten fortresses dominate the top of the
highest hills and among these the most important is undoubtedly the fortress of
Nossa Senhora dos Remédios built by the Portugueses in the mid-seventeenth
century. Visiting this monument you can virtually trace back the entire history
of the islands. Worth noting, finally, the events - from folk celebrations of
Carnival to the striking Holy Week processions - and the food. Be sure to try the island's typical delicacy: the tubalhau, salted cake made of shark meat.
